Neos Olympos

Welcome to the Realm of Living Myth

Far from being mere literary relics from a bygone age, the mythic impulses that existed in Greco-Roman antiquity are alive and well today. Indeed, they are thriving in the modern world. The Olympic Games, instituted by Hercules to honor the Olympians, are now celebrated worldwide. Transpersonal psychologists have taught us to detect the Greek gods and monsters in our own psyches. Tale-tellers, using media undreamed of by our ancestors, still recount the past, present and future exploits of Hellenic deities, demigods, heroes and fabulous beasts.

Hercules Invictus celebrates the classical mythical impulse, in all its modern manifestations, in the pages of Neos Olympos. And we invite you to celebrate with us.

  The Original Vision

As a youth I entertained a recurring fantasy, a powerful waking dream that I knew was very important, though I couldn't quite say why.

I glimpsed the top of a mountain, shrouded in darkness and further obscured by mist. Hovering on high, I could discern the ruins of an ancient Greek temple in the timeless twilight.

I waited alone, formless in the silence.

In time a lone figure, powerfully built and clad in the skin of a lion, made his way towards the abandoned temple. His hair and beard were still mostly brown, though streaked with white and gray. In his right hand he wielded a knobby club studded with bronze. My consciousness entered this figure and henceforth I saw through his eyes.

I knew that I was now Herakles, son of Zeus and progenitor of my line.

Entering the fallen structure, I moved through it unerringly until I reached a rectangular stone table, an altar to gods long forgotten. Upon the altar was an antique horn, 'from a heavenly bull' I told myself. It was of monstrous size and etched with arcane glyphs. Some of the etchings were inlaid with silver. I put down my club, then cautiously lifted the artefact to my lips, blowing into the smaller end with all my strength.

The bellowing call echoed through the firmaments.

Horn still in hand, I then exited the temple and peered purposefully into the murky skies near where I myself once hovered. I could detect faint presences, spirits that had answered my summons who would help me in carrying out my Olympian mission.

Some took on form while others remained formless, but this I knew... all who responded would assist me with ushering in a new Age of Heroes.

The Age of Heroes: a time when people strove to actualize their full potential and embody the Highest they could conceive. An age when individuals and groups would, through their actions, share their divine gifts with their communities and transform the world .

Though it has taken decades, this metaphorical vision is now becoming a reality. I would like to thank everyone who helped launch The Age of Heroes and I look forward to meeting those who will help further anchor it into the world.

Hercules Invictus

Hercules (Herakles, Ercole, Ercule), the mightiest son of Zeus and greatest of the ancient heroes, was no stranger to the human condition. He experienced, first hand, the heights and depths of mortality. The tales tell us that he made many mistakes, caused and suffered many misfortunes during his sojourn here - as do we all. Yet his shortcomings as a mortal never prevented him from accomplishing great things that were of lasting benefit to humanity. He left us a powerful legacy and a legend that has endured throughout the millenia.

Athena guided, inspired and protected him throughout his life and helped him re-establish his proper place on Olympos when his deeds were finally done. Together they now serve as Exemplars, inspiring those who tread the Heroic Path and those endeavoring to accomplish great things during their time on this earth.

It is our belief that the human spirit is essentially heroic and always seeking ways to express its innate nobility and greatness. And that a life fully lived, dedicated to actualizing the Highest we can conceive, is the noblest form of existence.

All humans have unique talents and gifts that can be cultivated and applied to the betterment of the world around them. And everyone is endowed with creativity, a truly divine power. We ask: If not you, then who? If not now, then when? Once you commit, your heart will guide you on your path. Of that we are certain.

Hercules Invictus embraces Olympism, the philosophy of the Olympic games (which Hercules founded), as a way of life. Olympism inspires the cultivation of individual excellence in the spirit of global fellowship. We honor all the gods equally and invite all their children to join us in our Quests.

Though fascinated with and inspired by the past, Hercules Invictus is focused on the challenges of the present and guided by our dreams of the future.
